“Does a website still make sense in 2026?”
It is a question becoming increasingly common across the technology industry—and for good reason.
Over the past decade, social media platforms have steadily changed how people discover information online, gradually eroding some of the web's traditional role as the primary starting point for discovery. More recently, rapid advances in artificial intelligence have accelerated that change. Instead of searching through ten blue links, visiting several websites, and piecing together an answer, users can increasingly ask an AI system a question and receive a synthesized response within seconds.
Even Google, the company whose search engine helped define how billions of people navigate the web, has increasingly integrated AI-generated answers into the search experience.
So the question is valid: If AI can answer our questions directly, do we still need websites?
We believe the answer is yes. The role of websites will undoubtedly change, but their underlying value remains remarkably important. In fact, the continued usefulness of AI itself may depend heavily on the survival of a healthy, diverse, and open web.
People use search engines for one fundamental reason: to find information.
That information can be almost anything—a technical solution, product specification, personal experience, historical record, scientific discovery, repair guide, restaurant recommendation, investigative report, opinion, tutorial, or answer to a highly specific question.
There is no single source for all of this knowledge.
The world's information is distributed across millions of independent websites, forums, publications, databases, businesses, government resources, social platforms, and individual creators. Someone in New Jersey might be searching for an obscure technical problem whose only documented solution was published years ago by an independent developer thousands of miles away.
That decentralized nature is one of the web's greatest strengths.
AI does not eliminate the need for this information. AI systems depend on information created by humans and organizations. Large language models are trained on enormous collections of data, while AI-powered search and retrieval systems increasingly access current information from websites and other sources to produce timely answers.
In simple terms, AI can change how information is delivered, but it cannot eliminate the need for information to be created, published, maintained, and made accessible in the first place.
If the open web stops producing valuable information, AI systems eventually face a fundamental problem: Where does new knowledge come from?
This relationship has already created significant tension.
Publishers, artists, writers, developers, news organizations, and website owners have increasingly questioned whether AI companies should be allowed to collect and use their work without meaningful consent, attribution, or compensation. Some organizations have implemented technical measures designed to restrict AI crawlers, while licensing agreements between AI companies and content owners have become increasingly common.
This is not merely a technical debate. It is also a question of fairness.
A sustainable information ecosystem cannot depend indefinitely on humans doing the difficult work of researching, writing, photographing, testing, investigating, documenting, and publishing while a small number of powerful technology companies capture most of the economic value created from that work.
AI companies deserve the opportunity to build useful and profitable products. Publishers and creators also deserve meaningful control over their work and fair compensation when their contributions create commercial value.
Those goals do not have to be mutually exclusive.
The healthiest future for AI is likely one in which technology companies, creators, publishers, businesses, and users can all benefit—a system built around permission, attribution, transparency, reasonable access, and fair value exchange rather than an endless race to extract as much data as possible.
The web has repeatedly adapted to new technologies.
Social media did not eliminate websites. Mobile apps did not eliminate websites. Video platforms did not eliminate written articles. Smartphones did not eliminate desktop computers.
Instead, each technology changed how people discovered and consumed information.
Interestingly, some social platforms have increasingly made portions of their content publicly accessible to search engines. Posts that were once primarily confined within closed platforms can now appear in traditional search results and be viewed through public web pages.
That tells us something important: Alternative platforms often adapt themselves to benefit from the reach and openness of the web—not necessarily the other way around.
The web remains one of the few global information systems where an individual, small business, nonprofit, developer, journalist, or independent creator can publish information on infrastructure they control and potentially reach people around the world without requiring every reader to join the same proprietary platform.
That independence matters.
A future in which most information is controlled by a handful of AI companies and social platforms would create serious concerns about competition, privacy, censorship, resilience, creator compensation, and who ultimately gets to decide what information people see.
The open web, despite its many imperfections, provides an important counterbalance to that concentration of power.
The more likely future is not the death of the website. It is the evolution of the website.
Businesses may reconsider where they invest their resources. Some traditional website features may become less important, while structured data, APIs, machine-readable content, provenance, licensing information, and AI-friendly interfaces become more valuable.
Search engine optimization may also evolve. Today, businesses think primarily about SEO: How can a website help search engines understand, index, and rank its content?
Tomorrow's question may increasingly become:
How can a website help both humans and AI systems accurately understand, retrieve, attribute, and use its information?
This could lead to a more mature form of AI optimization—not simply rewriting every article to please an algorithm, but creating clearer structures through which machines can understand what information exists, when it was published, who created it, how current it is, and under what conditions it may be used.
The ideal outcome should not be a web filled with robotic, formulaic content written exclusively for machines. Websites should continue to serve humans first. AI systems should adapt to human knowledge—not force every human creator to reshape their work around the preferences of a few technology companies.
The greater risk may be that AI becomes so effective at answering questions that users stop visiting the original sources altogether.
Imagine a website investing time and money into producing an excellent repair guide. An AI system reads that guide, summarizes the answer for millions of users, and sends almost none of those people back to the original publisher.
The AI product becomes more useful. The publisher loses traffic and revenue. Eventually, the publisher can no longer afford to create new guides.
Everyone benefits in the short term. In the long term, the information ecosystem becomes weaker.
That is the economic challenge the technology industry must solve.
If AI systems benefit from a healthy web, then maintaining a healthy web is not charity—it is infrastructure investment. Attribution, referrals, licensing, revenue sharing, and new compensation models may all have roles to play.
The goal should be a sustainable cycle in which humans and organizations have incentives to continue producing valuable information, AI systems can help people discover and understand that information, and users gain better access to knowledge without surrendering privacy, choice, or control to a small number of dominant corporations.
Yes—but perhaps not for exactly the same reasons it did ten years ago.
A website remains a place where an individual or organization can establish an independent presence, publish original information, communicate directly with an audience, control the presentation of its work, and participate in the broader information ecosystem.
AI will almost certainly change how people discover that information. Some websites will receive less traditional search traffic. Others may find entirely new audiences through AI-assisted discovery. The technologies, standards, and business models surrounding this transition are still evolving.
The outcome may not be fully revealed this year—or even next year. Technological shifts of this magnitude rarely resolve themselves on a convenient schedule.
But one thing is already clear: businesses, creators, developers, and publishers should begin thinking seriously about how they want to be positioned.
The question is no longer simply, “Do we need a website?”
A better question may be:
“What role should our website play in a world where humans and AI systems are both consumers of information?”
The answer to that question could shape the next era of the web.
